Your mind is not a tangled knot of thoughts — it is a magnet, and with every pulse it is sending and receiving across the universe.
Consider one feature of a magnet. It does not pull mud or paper; it pulls iron. Its capacity is impartial — only what matches its nature comes to it. The mind works the same way. The kind of thoughts and feelings you live in attract the same kind of experiences, situations, and people back to you, again and again. This is not coincidence. It is a law.
You have seen it many times. Someone whose every other sentence is a complaint never seems to run out of reasons to complain. Someone else who finds possibility in every situation has possibilities walking up to them. In the first case the magnet is pulling negativity; in the second, positivity. Both operate by the same principle, only with reversed poles.
Is the mind really a magnet, or is this just a metaphor? Modern physics tells us that everything in the universe — every thought, every feeling, every particle — vibrates at a particular frequency. Your brain emits waves continuously: alpha, beta, gamma, theta, delta. These waves are not visible only to laboratory instruments; their effect on the subtle environment around you is real. Sit beside a calm person and you feel lighter; sit beside a heavy, anxious person and the air seems to thicken. The reason is the frequency of the mind in front of you.
The law of attraction states that like attracts like. If fear is your dominant inner frequency, you will attract people, events, and conditions that resonate at that same frequency. If peace is dominant, peaceful surroundings drift toward you. It is like a radio dial. All the world's stations are broadcasting at once, but you only hear the one your dial is set to.
Here a very common confusion needs to be cleared. Many people think, "I want money, so why isn't money coming?" They do not see that their inner station is set to the absence of money, not its presence. They spend the day thinking about how to pay the bill, where rent will come from, how the month will end. The frequency of all those thoughts is lack, not abundance. And the magnet pulls lack, because lack is what is actually active inside.
Notice another aspect of the magnet's nature. A magnet does not select what to pull; it pulls by its very being. Likewise, your mind does not wait for your conscious orders — it works on whatever is being thought repeatedly, automatically. We think roughly sixty thousand thoughts a day, and most of them are the same as yesterday's, the day before's, last month's. This repetition becomes habit, and habit hardens into what looks like fate.
Indian tradition has spoken about this for ages. In the sixth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Arjuna admits, "The mind is restless, hard to control as the wind." Krishna replies, "Yes, but it is not impossible. With practice and detachment it can be mastered." Mastery here means directing the mind toward the kind of life you wish to flow into. The law of attraction rests entirely on this mastery.
Try a simple experiment over the next twenty-four hours. Whenever you find yourself thinking about a person, an event, or a thing, pause and ask: am I in the frequency of its presence or its absence? Am I looking at the solution or the problem? Is the underlying feeling enthusiasm or discouragement? This single observation will reveal how much time you unconsciously spend tuned to a "negative station."
Observation is the first transformation. The instant you start to notice "what am I attracting right now?", the grip of unconscious habit loosens. The magnet of the mind passes from your habits into your awareness. And awareness is the key that unlocks the inner chamber of the secret.
The chapter's essence in one line — the life you are living is a reflection of the steady vibration of your mind. If you want the reflection to change, do not fight the mirror; refine the face. The face is your inner vibration: your thoughts, feelings, imagination. Change those, and the reflection cannot stay the same.
In the next chapter we will see how thoughts turn into things — by what process a mental picture takes physical form. For now, remember: your mind is performing its magnetic work even at this moment. The only question is what it is pulling, and whether you are guiding it consciously or being carried along by habit.
The first step into the secret is this — treat the mind as a magnet. Every other decision changes after that.
