When the Sky Breaks Open

The artist learned to predict thunderstorms not by the weather report, but by the ache in his fingers.

On ordinary nights, his studio was quiet, paint drying, dust settling, the city below humming without interest in his solitude. But on nights when the sky darkened too quickly, when clouds stacked like unspoken thoughts and thunder rolled low and intimate, his hands trembled. His heart followed.

That was when she came.

The first time, he thought she was a trick of exhaustion. Lightning cracked open the sky, rain hammered against his window, and suddenly she was standing near the easel...barefoot, luminous, as if the storm had shaped her out of light and shadow.

“You’re late,” she said softly, smiling as she had never been anywhere else.

He didn’t ask who she was. He never did. Some truths arrive complete.

She became his muse that night. Not because she posed, but because when she existed, he remembered how to see. He painted until dawn, capturing curves of light he didn’t understand, colors that vanished the moment the thunder faded.

By morning, she was gone.

All that remained was the canvas, and the echo of her laughter buried somewhere in the walls.
